Wooden lamps in India: how to choose the right one for each room

Put a wooden floor lamp in the living room, a small table lamp or wall light by the bed, a pendant over the dining table, a pendant or table lamp at the desk, and a slim wall light in the entrance or corridor. That is the short answer to which wooden lamp fits which room. The rest of this guide gives the sizes, prices and numbers behind each choice, using only lamps we make and sell today.

Every handcrafted wooden lamp on this page is made by hand in our workshop in Khatauli, Uttar Pradesh. Lamps with a built-in LED run at 3000K, a warm white. Our Edison table lamps take a standard E27 bulb instead, so their colour is whatever bulb you fit.

Which wooden lamp is best for the living room?

The best wooden lamp for living room use is a floor lamp. It adds a warm layer of light without any wiring: it plugs into an ordinary socket and moves when the furniture does. If the room is long, add a table lamp on a console so the light comes from two places instead of one.

How much light does a living room need? Indian practice under IS 3646 puts general living-room light at 100 to 200 lux, and 300 to 500 lux where you read. For a 12 × 14 ft room (15.6 m²) that is roughly 1,560 to 3,120 lumens in total, shared across every light in the room. We do not list lumen figures for our lamps, so read this as a guide to layering: a floor lamp is one warm layer among two or three, not the whole job.

Which wooden lamp works best in a bedroom?

In a bedroom, use a small wooden table lamp or a compact wall light beside the bed, ideally one you can dim. Bedrooms need less light than any other room: 50 to 100 lux overall and 200 to 300 lux at the bedside. A low, warm lamp within reach of the pillow covers both.

Warm light also suits the hour. Research on evening lighting has found that warm 3000K light suppresses melatonin less than cool white light. That is not a sleep cure, but it is a fair reason to keep the bedroom on warm light after dark. Two of our table lamps pair an Edison bulb with a brass knob dimmer, so you set the level by hand.

For a wall-mounted bedside light, our wall light height and placement guide gives the mounting heights. Table lamps for the bedside are in wooden table lamps.

What size and height should a dining table pendant be?

Hang the bottom of the pendant 30 to 36 inches (76 to 91 cm) above the tabletop under an 8 ft ceiling, and add 3 inches for every extra foot of ceiling. Centre it on the table, not on the room. Over a rectangular table seating six to ten, one linear pendant is enough.

Width follows the table. A 30-inch pendant over a 6 ft (72-inch) table is in proportion. Heavier fixtures belong toward the top of the height range so faces across the table stay visible. For colour, dining light sits well at 2700K to 3000K with a dimmer, and our built-in LEDs at 3000K fall inside that range. The full working, including longer tables, is in our pendant light size and height guide.

Which wooden lamp suits a study or home office?

For a study, hang a linear wooden pendant over the desk or set a wooden table lamp beside it. Reading needs 300 to 500 lux on the page. Because we do not publish lumen figures, treat the wooden lamp as the warm layer of the room and add a task light if you work for hours.

A pendant keeps the desk clear and spreads light along its length. A table lamp gives you a pool of light at one end and something to switch off when the day is done.

What lighting works for an entrance or corridor?

Use a slim wooden wall light, or a wall light with a shelf, in an entrance or corridor. It keeps the floor clear, lights the walk-through to the 100 to 150 lux a passage needs, and a shelf version gives you somewhere to put keys. Up-and-down models throw light onto both the ceiling and the floor.

Wall lights such as the Aurora and the Nix Line are hardwired, so plan an electrician's visit before you buy. The Nix Line 30-inch mounts either vertically or horizontally, which helps on a narrow wall beside a door.

More shapes are in wooden wall lights.

Does the wood itself make a difference?

Teak and sheesham are two of the woods in our range, and they behave differently on the bench. Sheesham is the denser and harder of the two: about 770 kg/m³ dried against teak's 655 kg/m³, and 1,660 lbf on the Janka hardness test against teak's 1,070 lbf. Teak carries natural oils, which is why it resists decay so well, and also why its surface sometimes needs a solvent wipe before a finish will take. Both are dimensionally stable hardwoods. (Figures from the Wood Database.)

A fair question about any wooden lamp is heat. A good LED strip runs at about 45 to 50 °C at its surface, far below the temperature at which wood ignites. Over years, the effect of that warmth is on the finish, which can dry out, not on the wood itself.

Buying a wooden lamp from NixWoods

Shipping is free across India on prepaid orders. Cash on delivery works as part-paid: 10% online when you order, the rest when the lamp arrives. The wood carries a 3-year warranty and the electricals 1 year.

Still deciding? Start with the room you sit in most. For most homes that is the living room, so a floor lamp beside the sofa is the place to begin.
