Wooden Lighting FAQ: Your Questions Answered (Pendant, Floor & Wall Lights)

Everything people ask us about handcrafted wooden lighting — pendant lights, floor lamps, wall lights, wood types and care — answered simply. All NixWoods pieces are solid wood, handcrafted in India.

Wooden pendant lights & dining tables

How high should a wooden pendant light hang above a dining table?

Hang the bottom of the pendant about 75–91 cm (30–36 inches) above the tabletop. Use 30–32 inches in cosy rooms or with smaller pendants, and 33–36 inches in larger rooms or for clear sightlines.

What size pendant light should I get for my dining table?

For a round table, pick one pendant about half to two-thirds of the table's width. For a rectangular table, use a linear pendant or a row of 2–3 pendants spanning roughly half to two-thirds of the table length. Browse options in our wooden pendant lights collection.

How many pendant lights for a 6-seater dining table?

One linear pendant or 2–3 round pendants works best for a 6-seater, aiming for warm, even light across the table. Add wall lights for ambience.

Which wood is best for pendant lights?

Rosewood (sheesham) and teak are the most popular for their durability and rich grain; pine is a lighter, budget-friendly option. NixWoods pendants are made from solid teak, rosewood and pine.

Wooden floor lamps

Are wooden floor lamps good for living rooms?

Yes. A wooden floor lamp adds warm, natural light and texture, and suits Scandinavian, Japandi, modern and rustic interiors. It works as a cosy reading light beside a sofa or armchair, or as ambient light in a corner. See our wooden floor lamps.

How do I choose a wooden floor lamp?

Match it to your space and style, check the height (so the shade sits near eye level when seated), and place it in a corner or beside seating. Pick a wood tone and finish that complements your existing furniture.

Can a floor lamp be the main light source in a room?

It can in smaller rooms, but it works best paired with overhead or ambient lighting for full coverage. Wooden floor lamps are ideal as a warm secondary or accent light.

Wooden wall lights

Are wooden wall lights good for bedrooms?

Yes — a wall light mounted near the headboard frees up bedside-table space and gives soft, low-glare reading light. Explore our wooden wall lights.

Are wooden wall lights energy efficient?

Yes. NixWoods wall lights use integrated warm-white LEDs (about 2700–3000K) rated for 25,000+ hours, so they use very little power and rarely need replacing.

Do wall lights need an electrician to install?

Usually yes — most wall lights need a direct wire connection, so a quick visit from a basic electrician is recommended.

Wood types & care

Rosewood vs teak vs sheesham — which is best?

Sheesham (Indian rosewood) offers bold grain and durability for indoor pieces; teak has higher natural oils and excellent moisture resistance; rosewood is prized for its rich, rosy-brown tone and hardness. All three are excellent solid hardwoods for lighting.

Is sheesham the same as Indian rosewood?

Yes — sheesham is commonly known as Indian rosewood. It's one of the hardest, most durable domestic timbers in India and ages richer over time.

Does solid wood warp or crack in Indian heat and humidity?

Quality seasoned sheesham and teak resist warping and cracking in Indian conditions. NixWoods uses solid, hand-finished wood (no MDF or veneer) built to last.

How do I clean and care for a wooden lamp?

Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth and avoid water and harsh chemicals on the wood. Refresh the natural-oil finish with a light wipe of wood oil every 6–12 months. Keep it out of direct sunlight to prevent fading.

More common questions

How long do handmade wooden lamps typically last?

With basic care, a solid-wood lamp lasts for decades — good timber only ages richer over time. NixWoods lamps are hand-finished solid teak, rosewood and sheesham (no MDF or veneer), and the integrated warm-white LEDs are rated for 25,000+ hours, so there are no bulbs to replace. Just dust occasionally and re-oil once or twice a year.

Mango wood vs teak — which is better for lamps?

Teak has higher natural oils and superb moisture resistance, making it the more premium, longer-lasting choice; mango wood is lighter and more affordable with attractive open grain, but it's softer and less water-resistant. For wooden lighting built to last in Indian conditions, teak (or sheesham) is the stronger pick. NixWoods crafts its lamps from solid teak, rosewood and sheesham.

What are the best floor lamps for a living room in India?

The best living-room floor lamps balance warm light, a slim footprint and a solid-wood build that suits Indian interiors and humidity. Look for a corner or arc lamp with a warm-white LED and a shade near eye level for comfortable reading beside a sofa. Browse handcrafted options in our wooden floor lamps collection.

How do I choose the right size wall lamp for my room?

Scale the wall light to its wall — a compact sconce for narrow spaces or beside a bed, and a larger fixture for a feature wall or above a console. Mount it around eye level (roughly 150–170 cm from the floor) for soft, low-glare light. Explore sizes in our wooden wall lights collection.

Do wooden pendant lights have any disadvantages?

The main trade-offs: solid-wood pendants cost more than mass-made metal or plastic, each piece's grain varies slightly (part of the handcrafted charm), and they're made for indoor use, not wet or outdoor spots. Beyond that they're durable, warm and low-maintenance. NixWoods pendants are solid teak and rosewood with integrated warm-white LEDs, built to last indoors for years.

What are the different types of wooden pendant lights?

The main types are single pendants (one shade, ideal over a side table or kitchen island), linear pendants (a long bar for dining tables and counters), and clusters of 2–3 grouped as a feature. Shapes range from domes and geometric wood-slat designs to hollow-bowl forms. See the range in our wooden pendant lights collection.

How tall should a floor lamp be?

Most floor lamps stand about 147–163 cm (58–64 inches) tall, with the bottom of the shade at or just below eye level when you're seated to cut glare. Choose a shorter lamp (around 120–150 cm) for a reading nook and a taller one for ambient corner light. Browse handcrafted options in our wooden floor lamps collection.

How far apart should pendant lights be?

Space multiple pendants roughly 60–76 cm (24–30 inches) apart, measured centre to centre, so light spreads evenly without crowding. Over a dining table or island, keep the end pendants about 30–38 cm in from the edges. For a single linear pendant, simply centre it over the surface. See our wooden pendant lights collection.

Is teak or rosewood more expensive?

Rosewood (sheesham) is usually the pricier of the two, prized for its dense, richly figured dark grain, while teak commands a premium for its natural oils and moisture resistance. For indoor lighting both are excellent hardwoods, so choose on look and warmth rather than cost alone. NixWoods crafts its lamps from solid teak, rosewood and sheesham.

How many pendant lights do I need over a kitchen island?

As a rule of thumb, use two to three pendants over a standard kitchen island, or one linear pendant for a cleaner look. Space multiple pendants evenly (about 60–76 cm apart) and hang them 75–90 cm above the counter. Explore single and linear styles in our wooden pendant lights collection.

Can I install pendant lights without a false ceiling?

Yes. Pendants like ours hang from a small surface-mounted canopy fixed directly to the true ceiling — no false ceiling, no plaster cutting. A standard ceiling electrical point is all you need, and the suspension wires set your drop height. See surface-mount options in our wooden pendant lights collection.

Are LED lights bad for your eyes?

Not inherently. The real culprits are cool, blue-heavy light (5000–6500K) used at night and cheap, flickering drivers — both cause eye strain over time. Warm-white LEDs (2700–3000K) with a quality driver are gentle for evening use. NixWoods lamps use integrated warm-white LEDs in exactly that range.

What height should wall lights be from the floor?

As a rule: about 150–170 cm from the floor to the fixture's centre in living areas (roughly eye level), 120–150 cm beside a bed so light falls on your book rather than your eyes, and around 160 cm when flanking a mirror. Explore mounting-friendly designs in our wooden wall lights collection.

What is the best lighting for a rented flat where I can't drill or rewire?

Plug-in lamps. A wooden floor lamp beside your seating plus a warm table lamp gives a rented flat cosy, layered light with no drilling, no electrician and nothing left behind when you move. Choose warm white (2700–3000K) for that soft evening glow. Start with our wooden floor lamps.

Do NixWoods lamps use Edison bulbs, or are they all integrated LED?

Most NixWoods lamps use integrated warm-white LEDs (2700–3000K, 25,000+ hour rating) with no bulb to buy or change. A few of our Edison-style vintage table lamps use a real E27 Edison bulb instead, for that visible-filament look — and those ship with the bulb included, so there's nothing extra to order. Browse both styles in our wooden table lamps collection.

What's the difference between a wooden ceiling lamp and a pendant light?

They're usually the same thing by another name — a "ceiling lamp" search often just means a light that hangs from the ceiling, which is exactly what a pendant is (as opposed to a flush-mount fixture sitting flat against the ceiling). NixWoods' hanging fixtures are all pendant-style: solid wood with integrated warm-white LEDs, surface-mounted with no false ceiling needed. See our wooden pendant lights collection.

Do you make wooden lights in oak?

No — NixWoods works in solid teak, rosewood (sheesham) and pine, chosen for their strength, warm grain and resistance to Indian heat and humidity. Oak isn't part of our range, but teak and sheesham offer comparable, often better, durability for handcrafted lighting. Read more on wood choice.

Table lamp or wall light — which is better for a bedside?

A wall light mounted beside the headboard frees up nightstand space and gives soft, low-glare reading light with no cord in reach, but it needs an electrician for the wiring. A table lamp needs zero installation and can be moved or swapped anytime, at the cost of nightstand space. Renting or want flexibility? Start with a table lamp. Explore our wooden table lamps and wooden wall lights.

Single pendant or a linear wall/ceiling light — which should I pick?

A single pendant suits round tables, side tables or a compact space — one clear focal point. A linear fixture (wall or pendant) works better for rectangular dining tables, kitchen islands or long walls, spreading warm light evenly along the surface instead of pooling in one spot. Match the fixture's shape to the shape of what it's lighting. See both in our wooden pendant lights and wooden wall lights collections.
