Dining Pendant Light Size & Height Guide | NixWoods

Hang a pendant light so its base sits 75–90 cm (30–36 inches) above your dining table. For the right size, match the pendant's diameter to roughly one-half to two-thirds of the table's narrowest width. Add about 8 cm of extra drop for every 30 cm your ceiling rises above the standard 2.4 m.
Getting a pendant light "almost right" is what makes a beautiful dining area feel slightly off — a lamp hung too high floats awkwardly, one hung too low blocks eye contact across the table. This guide gives you the exact numbers for Indian dining rooms, whether you have a cosy four-seater in a 2BHK or a long eight-seater for family dinners. Every NixWoods pendant is handcrafted in solid wood at our Khatauli workshop, so the measurements below are written for real, warm-glow wooden lighting — not generic showroom fittings.
How high should a pendant light hang over a dining table?
The reliable rule for Indian homes is 75–90 cm (30–36 inches) from the tabletop to the bottom of the pendant. This keeps the light source below eye level of seated diners so it lights the food and faces without glaring into anyone's eyes, and it clears the head of anyone standing to serve.
Two things shift that number:
- Ceiling height. The 75–90 cm range assumes a standard 2.4 m (8 ft) ceiling. For every extra 30 cm of ceiling height, add roughly 8 cm to the drop so the fixture still feels anchored to the table rather than lost in the room.
- Pendant style. A solid, downward-glowing shade (like a bowl or tube) can sit a touch lower for an intimate pool of light. An open or sculptural pendant that throws light in all directions is better hung slightly higher.
Quick height reference
| Ceiling height | Bottom of pendant above table |
|---|---|
| 2.4 m (8 ft) — standard | 75–85 cm (30–33 in) |
| 2.7 m (9 ft) | 83–93 cm (33–36 in) |
| 3.0 m (10 ft) | 90–100 cm (36–40 in) |
What size pendant light suits your dining table?
Size is where most people go wrong — a pendant that looks generous in a photo can look like a bead over a large table. Work from your table's dimensions, not the room's.
The diameter rule
For a single round or square pendant, aim for a diameter of one-half to two-thirds of the table's narrowest side. A 90 cm wide table pairs well with a 45–60 cm pendant. If your pendant is smaller than that, use a linear pendant or a cluster of two to three lights instead of one undersized fixture.
Match the shape to the table
- Round or square tables look best under a single round pendant, centred over the middle. Our Scandinavian Rosewood Round Pendant Light is sized for exactly this — a warm, handcrafted focal point for four-to-six seaters.
- Rectangular tables (the most common shape in Indian dining rooms) need length, not a single circle. A 30" Rosewood Linear Pendant runs along the table and lights every seat evenly.
- Long six-to-eight seaters or statement rooms suit a sculptural, wider fixture. The Double Arm Teak Pendant Light spreads its glow across a bigger footprint while acting as a centrepiece.
Table size to pendant size & height
| Table (seats) | Suggested pendant | Pendant width / type | Height above table |
|---|---|---|---|
| Round, 4-seat (90 cm) | Single round pendant | 45–60 cm round | 75–85 cm |
| Square, 4-seat (100 cm) | Single round/bowl | 50–65 cm | 75–85 cm |
| Rectangular, 6-seat (150 cm) | Linear pendant | 75–90 cm long | 78–88 cm |
| Rectangular, 8-seat (200 cm+) | Linear or double-arm | 90–120 cm / sculptural | 80–90 cm |
Positioning: get it centred and level
Centre the pendant over the table, not the room — dining tables are rarely in the exact centre of the space. Measure the table's midpoint and align the fixture there. For linear pendants, run the long axis parallel to the table's long edge and keep an equal overhang at both ends. If your table can be extended, position for its most-used everyday size.
Also mind the width: a pendant should stay at least 15 cm inside each edge of the table so nobody knocks it while sitting down or reaching across.
A note on light warmth and glare
Height and size solve the geometry; warmth solves the mood. For dining, choose a warm LED in the 2700K–3000K range and, ideally, a dimmable fitting so you can drop the level for slow dinners. Solid wood shades help here too — the timber diffuses and softens the glow instead of pushing out a hard, clinical beam, which is a big part of why handcrafted wooden pendants feel so calming above a table.
Frequently asked questions
How high should a pendant hang over a dining table in India?
Between 75 and 90 cm (30–36 inches) from the tabletop to the base of the pendant on a standard 2.4 m ceiling. Add about 8 cm for every extra 30 cm of ceiling height.
What size pendant do I need for a 6-seater table?
A 6-seater is usually rectangular (around 150 cm long), so a single round pendant will look small. Use a linear pendant roughly 75–90 cm long, or a cluster of two to three smaller pendants spaced evenly.
Can one pendant light a whole dining table?
Yes for round, square, and small rectangular tables. For tables longer than about 150 cm, a single round pendant struggles to light the ends — switch to a linear pendant or multiple lights.
Should the pendant be as wide as the table?
No. A single pendant should be about one-half to two-thirds of the table's narrowest width, staying at least 15 cm inside each edge. Full-length coverage on a long table comes from a linear fixture, not one oversized shade.
How far apart should multiple pendants be?
Space a row of pendants evenly along the table's length — typically 60–75 cm centre-to-centre — with the outer lights set in from the table ends so the spread stays balanced.
