Up Down Wall Lights: What They Are, Where to Use Them & How to Choose
Share
An up down wall light is a wall-mounted fixture that sends light in two directions at once — up towards the ceiling and down towards the floor. Instead of a single bright spot, you get two soft beams of light on the wall, which is why designers use them to make a room feel calm, layered and a little more expensive than it is.
This guide explains how up down wall lights work, where they look best in Indian homes, how they compare with linear and down-only wall lights, and what to check before you buy.
How an up down wall light works
Inside the fixture there are two light sources (or one LED channel along each edge): one facing up, one facing down. Because the light hits the wall rather than your eyes, there's very little glare. The wall itself becomes the reflector — which is why up down lights look best on a smooth, light-coloured wall.
Up down vs down-only vs linear wall lights
| Up down wall light | Down-only wall light | Linear wall light | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light direction | Above and below | Below only | Long, even wash (down or up-and-down) |
| Look | Architectural, dramatic | Quiet, focused | Clean, modern, horizontal |
| Best for | Feature walls, either side of a bed, stairs | Reading, bedside, mirrors | Above a sofa, headboard or sideboard |
| Makes a room feel | Taller | Cosier | Wider |
Some lights do both jobs. The Aurora Linear Wall Light and the Compact Wooden Wall Light are both available as down-only or up-and-down versions, so you can pick the effect you want.
Where to use up down wall lights
Either side of the bed
A matching pair of small up down lights beside the headboard is the classic hotel look. Light from below helps you read; light from above adds a soft glow. Mount them about 100–120 cm from the floor. The Arden Rosewood Up Down Wall Light is compact enough to pair.
On a living-room feature wall
One long up down bar on the TV wall or behind the sofa turns a plain wall into the room's focal point. A dimmable fixture is worth it here, so you can go from bright to cinema-dim. The Compact Wooden Wall Light in solid sheesham comes in 24 and 40 inch lengths with an up-and-down version, and dims by remote.
Along stairs and corridors
Placed every 1.5–2 metres, up down lights create a rhythm of light on the wall and make steps safe at night without a harsh ceiling light.
Outside the front door?
Up down lights are popular outdoors too, but solid wood fixtures are designed for indoor use. For balconies and exteriors, choose a metal fixture rated IP44 or higher.
Where linear wall lights work better
If your wall is wide and you want even light across it — above a three-seater sofa, a king-size headboard or a long sideboard — a linear wall light is usually the better choice. Good options:
- Aurora Linear Wall Light — solid teak, 36 or 48 inch, down-only or up-and-down.
- Timber Wall Light — natural teak, 24 or 36 inch.
- Aure Linear Wall Light — compact teak linear sconce.
- Nix Line 30-inch LED Wall Light — slim and affordable, in pine, teak or rosewood.
How to choose an up down wall light
- Size to the wall. Small (around 12–14 inch) for bedsides and pairs; 24–40 inch for feature walls.
- Warm white only. 2700–3000K keeps the light relaxing. See warm white vs cool white.
- Dimming. Worth having in bedrooms and living rooms. A remote-dimmable fixture avoids rewiring for a wall dimmer.
- Wall finish. Matte, light walls show the up and down beams best; glossy or very dark walls reduce the effect.
- Ceiling height. Leave at least 50–60 cm between the fixture and the ceiling so the upward light can spread.
- Installation. Most up down lights are hardwired to a standard wall point — one electrician visit. Our wall light height & placement guide covers spacing.
Frequently asked questions
What is an up down wall light?
A wall light that emits light both upward and downward from the same fixture, creating two beams of light on the wall.
Are up down wall lights good for bedrooms?
Yes. A pair either side of the bed gives reading light below and ambient glow above, replacing bedside table lamps.
How far apart should up down wall lights be?
Along a wall or corridor, space them about 1.5–2 metres apart. Either side of a bed, centre them roughly 15–20 cm beyond the edges of the headboard.
Is an up down wall light brighter than a normal wall light?
Not necessarily brighter, but it spreads light over more of the wall, so a room usually feels better lit and more even.
What's the difference between an up down light and a linear wall light?
An up down light is defined by the direction of its light; a linear light is defined by its long, horizontal shape. Some linear lights, like the Aurora, are also available in an up-and-down version.
