Rosewood (sheesham) lamps: a buyer's guide for Indian homes

A rosewood or sheesham lamp is a wall light, pendant, floor lamp or table lamp whose body is made from rosewood, the wood most Indian shops also call sheesham, and it is for homes that want warm light coming from a piece of real wood rather than plastic or metal. This guide covers every rosewood and sheesham lamp NixWoods makes, what each costs, and where each one works.

Is rosewood the same as sheesham?

In everyday Indian use, yes. Shops and buyers use "rosewood" and "sheesham" for the same wood, and our product pages do too. Botanically they are two names with two species behind them. Sheesham is Dalbergia sissoo; East Indian rosewood is Dalbergia latifolia. When choosing a lamp, size, light and room matter more than the name.

If you are choosing between woods rather than between lamps, read sheesham vs teak wood and rosewood vs teak vs mango wood. Two of our lamps come in a teak option as well, and both are marked in the table below.

Which rosewood lamp should you buy for each room?

Pick by where the light needs to land. Wall lights wash a bedroom or passage wall. Pendants hang over a dining table or kitchen island. Floor lamps light a living-room corner without drilling. Table lamps suit a bedside, console or desk. Each lamp below is titled or tagged rosewood or sheesham on its product page.

How high should a rosewood pendant hang over a dining table?

With an 8 ft ceiling, the bottom of the pendant should sit 30 to 36 inches (76 to 91 cm) above the tabletop. Add 3 inches for every extra foot of ceiling height. Centre the light on the table, not on the room, so it lands on the plates and the faces around them.

  1. Measure floor to ceiling. At 8 ft, aim for 30 to 36 inches above the table. At 10 ft, add 6 inches and aim for 36 to 42 inches.
  2. Mark the centre of the table, not the centre of the room, and hang from there.
  3. Keep a heavier pendant towards the top of the range so people can see each other across the table.
  4. Match length to table. One linear pendant is enough for a rectangular table of six to ten seats, and a 30-inch pendant is in proportion over a 6 ft table. The 30" linear pendant fits that brief.

Does a built-in LED dry out or harm the wood?

Not in normal use. An LED strip in good condition runs at about 45 to 50 °C at its surface, and above 60 °C is a fault. Wood ignites at a far higher temperature, so fire is not the concern. Over years, the real effect of that warmth is on the finish, which can dry, not on the wood underneath.

Put plainly, from the workshop side: in a lamp the light source sits close to the wood, so the finish is the part that ages first, not the timber. Heat and grease from a hob dull a finish too, which is why where you hang the lamp matters as much as what is inside it.

What colour of light do these lamps give?

Our lamps with built-in LEDs give 3000K warm white. That is warm, not yellow; the old incandescent bulb sat lower, at about 2700K. The Edison table lamps work differently: they take a bulb, so their light is the colour of the bulb you fit. A warm-white bulb keeps them in step with the rest.

Warm 3000K light also suppresses melatonin less than cool white light in the evening, which is one reason it suits bedrooms and living rooms after dark. Several lamps let you turn the light down without a wall switch: the 3 ft vertical pendant has a built-in dimmer, the Compact wooden wall light works by remote, and the two Edison lamps have a brass dimmer knob. Do not add a separate wall dimmer to these unless the product page says it is compatible; a driver that is not built for one can flicker or fail.

Where should you not use a rosewood lamp?

These are indoor lights for dry rooms. None of our lamps declares an IP rating, so do not fit one inside a shower or bath area, on an open balcony, or on a veranda that takes monsoon damp. In a kitchen, keep pendants off the space directly above the hob, where heat and grease dull any finish.

A bathroom with an exhaust fan is still a wet room, so keep these lamps out of it.
