Made by Hand in Khatauli: The People Behind NixWoods Lighting

Most lighting you can buy today is stamped out of metal or moulded from plastic, thousands of identical units at a time. NixWoods is the opposite of that. Every light we make is built by hand, from real solid wood, in one workshop in Khatauli, a small town in Uttar Pradesh, India.

One workshop, many hands

NixWoods began in a modest Khatauli workshop and today works with a collective of more than fifteen artisan families. These are woodworkers who have shaped timber for years — some for generations. Nothing here moves down a factory line. A piece is cut, joined, hand-sanded and finished by people who know wood by feel, and it carries their care in every surface.

Working this way, in small batches with fair wages, keeps a regional craft alive. It also means we can hold a standard a big production line never could: if a piece isn't right, it doesn't leave the workshop.

Real solid wood — and why it matters for light

We build from solid sheesham (Indian rosewood), teak and pine. No MDF. No veneer. No printed wood-effect. That choice isn't only about longevity, though solid wood does last for decades — it's about how a room feels when the light comes on.

Solid hardwood does something metal and plastic can't: it absorbs and softens light instead of bouncing it back harshly. The natural grain catches a warm glow differently at every angle. The quiet, settled warmth you notice in a well-made room comes partly from materials like this. That's the feeling we're after with every lamp.

No two pieces alike

Because each piece is real wood, no two are identical. Grain runs its own way; tone shifts a little from one board to the next; a small knot tells you where the tree grew. We treat these as the mark of the real thing, not flaws to sand away. When a NixWoods light arrives in your home, it is genuinely one of a kind.

A homegrown Indian brand

NixWoods is built for modern Indian homes — warm, handcrafted lighting at a price real homeowners can actually buy, shipped free across India. It's a small, founder-run brand trying to do one thing properly: turn a traditional wood-craft workshop into a design-led lighting label, with the makers and the material honest at the centre of it.

Every piece across our range is made this same way — by hand, in solid wood, in Khatauli:

Solid wood. No two alike.
